How to prepare for your first design project
You don't need to know exactly what you want before working with a designer. That's the designer's job. But a little preparation makes the process faster and the result much closer to what you had in mind.
The essentials
- Your business name, spelled exactly as it should appear, plus any tagline.
- What you sell, in one or two sentences.
- Who you sell to. A luxury candle brand and a kids' party business need very different looks.
Helpful extras
- 2–3 brands you like, even from a different industry. It's the fastest way to show a style.
- Colors you love or already use.
- Anything you don't want. This is just as useful as what you do want.
- Where it will be used: signage, packaging, Instagram, apparel, a website.
- Your deadline, if you have a launch date.
Be clear on what the business does and who it's for. The rest is my job.
